SANDY BEVERIDGE RETIRES
Hamilton, Ontario – Hamilton Tiger-Cats safety Sandy Beveridge announced his retirement from football today after eight CFL seasons. Beveridge has accepted a firefighter position with the Hamilton Fire Department.
“This was an extremely difficult decision,” said Beveridge. “I am still passionate about being a Tiger-Cat and will always bleed Black and Gold, but I could not pass up this exceptional opportunity outside of football. I would like to thank the people of Hamilton, the Tiger-Cats organization, the coaches, and especially my teammates for providing me with eight years of great memories. I look forward to continue to serve and represent to City of Hamilton in a different role with Hamilton Fire Department.”
Beveridge originally joined the Ticats as an undrafted free agent on May 14, 2003. After earning a roster spot in his first professional training camp, the UBC product would go on to play in 105 regular season games over eight seasons, making 124 defensive tackles, 77 special teams tackles and five interceptions.
“It’s a bittersweet day here in TigerTown with the retirement of Sandy Beveridge,” said Ticats President Scott Mitchell. “Beyond his leadership and ability on the field, there is no single player that has done more for the Tiger-Cats and this community since Bob Young took over the ownership of this proud franchise. He has been selfless in his dedication to all of our community causes and it’s only appropriate that Sandy will continue to serve this great community with the fire department moving forward. We wish Sandy the best and thank him for his outstanding contribution to the Tiger-Cats both on and off the field.”
During his time in Hamilton, Beveridge was one of the Ticats most frequent contributors to the community. He made over 450 personal appearances and committed more than 1,500 hours on behalf of the team at school and hospital visits, minor football clinics, and various other appearances that benefited local charities and community groups.
Beveridge also purchased over 2,000 tickets on behalf of McMaster Children’s Hospital and Ronald McDonald House for kids to attend games throughout his time with the organization. Beveridge was presented with the Charlotte Simmons Humanitarian Award in 2009 by the Cats Claws Fan Club in recognition of his devotion to the betterment of the local community
