DOUG SAMS   Quarterbacks Coach

Doug Sams begins his first season as quarterbacks coach with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in 2012.  A veteran coach with almost three and a half decades of experience in professional and US college football, Sams returns to the CFL after most recently serving as offensive coordinator at Edinboro University in 2011.

Before a four-year stint as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Delaware State and a one-year stint as offensive line coach at Stanford, Sams spent 14 years as a head coach at Northern Michigan (2002-05) and Fairmont State (1992-2001).  At Fairmont State, he compiled an overall record of 53-47 and led the Fighting Falcons to championships in 1996 and 2000.  He was named the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Coach of Year in 1996.   

Sams previous CFL stints came as offensive coordinator with the Ottawa Rough Riders from 1989-91, defensive line coach and special teams coordinator with the Grey Cup champion Edmonton Eskimos in 1987 and offensive line coach with the Montreal Alouettes in 1986.

Sams’ coaching career began in 1978, when he served as defensive line coach at Oregon State.   He followed up that experience with stops at Northern Iowa and Idaho State in various capacities on the offensive side of the ball before heading north to the CFL.

Sams and his wife, Brenda, have three daughters; Christina Robinson, Tisha Haught and Kate. Sams earned his Bachelor's degree at Oregon State in 1978 and a Master's degree from Idaho State in 1984.
