Initiative aims to raise funds and awareness for poverty and homelessness in Halton & Hamilton

Tiger-Cats kicker Marc Liegghio and FirstOntario Senior Vice-President of Marketing, Communications & Community Partnerships, Joanne Battaglia will be supporting United Way Halton & Hamilton’s Sleepless For Our Community initiative by spending one night sleeping in their cars, to raise funds and awareness for poverty and homelessness in the local community.

Participants in this year’s Sleepless For Our Community will spend the night of February 21st in their car, from 10 p.m. until 8 a.m. to provide awareness of the harsh realities faced by individuals and families living in poverty, while also encouraging open conversations about the far-reaching impacts in our communities.

“Supporting our local communities has always been important to me,” said Liegghio. “The Sleepless For Our Community initiative is a great opportunity to raise funds and awareness through collective action. This is a more than worthy cause and I encourage everyone to join us in making an impact together so we can create positive change and uplift those who need it most.”

Sleepless for Our Community aims to raise awareness about the interconnected issues surrounding poverty in our communities and raise funds to help foster lasting change. These funds help support programs in critical areas such as transitional housing support, food security, mental health services and community inclusion for those in need across Halton and Hamilton.

“Our communities are facing an economic crisis with homelessness placing a great deal of pressure on many vulnerable individuals and families,” said Battaglia. “It’s important to bring awareness whenever possible and it’s critical that we all do our part, so that people in our communities have a safe and secure place to call home. This is only one evening for me, but for far too many people, having a comfortable, safe and warm place to sleep is a daily challenge.”

Those interested in making a donation to the Sleepless for Our Community initiative can do so at the links below. All donations will be matched by anonymous United Way supporters, ensuring donations have double the impact up to $150,000.
