DR. CARLA EDWARDS

MSc, MD, FRCP(C)

Dr. Carla Edwards is a Sports Psychiatrist whose practice focuses on the treatment of mental illness and psychological struggles in athletes. Her early years in competitive sport primed her for a career supporting athletes, and throughout her journey in medicine she has endeavoured to fill the gap between medicine and sports to facilitate more sport-competent care to athletes. In her clinical practice Dr. Edwards supports athletes spanning youth sports, varsity, Olympic and professional levels (including the Hamilton Tiger-Cats and Forge). She has authored many book chapters and journal articles and is the President of the International Society for Sports Psychiatry.

Dr. Carla Edwards will present a keynote presentation titled Enhancing Practitioner Skills to Support Athlete Mental Health.

“While athletes can do incredible things in sport, they can experience the same mental health challenges as everyone else. Sports create additional circumstances that can influence the mental health of its participants. Developing an approach to detecting and identifying mental health challenges can enhance the care provided to athletes, and open pathways for pursuing additional avenues of support. This session will provide the audience with essential knowledge regarding athlete mental health to improve prevention, detection, referral decisions, and collaborative care for athletes.”

CLAIRE TOFFELMIRE
